On April 20, 2023, we were privileged to host Geoffrey Okamoto, Managing Director at Goldman Sachs, and a proud alumnus of Cal Poly Pomona. Before joining Goldman Sachs, Mr. Okamoto held significant roles at the International Monetary Fund and the U.S. Treasury Department, earning him the Alexander Hamilton Award.
During our meeting, Mr. Okamoto shared the inner workings of major institutions like Goldman Sachs and the International Monetary Fund, emphasizing the importance of understanding one's organization and capacity for change. He gave our members a deeper understanding of negotiation strategies in international relations, the necessity of a practical viewpoint, and identifying clear goals.
Mr. Okamoto also touched on the invaluable role mentors play in personal and professional growth. He emphasized the need for cultural alignment within teams and the importance of balance between skills and relationships in today's complex financial companies.
He concluded his talk by giving some thoughtful advice for those starting their careers. He highlighted the importance of establishing a professional framework, the need for intellectual curiosity, humility, and how one’s drive for success often holds more value than proficiency in today's fast-evolving world. Mr. Okamoto's insights gave us a deeper understanding of the industry and valuable advice for navigating our future careers.
